I did it!

Ladies & gentlemen, I did it! I survived all of 2012 without purchasing any new clothes. Whew!

When I began this challenge, I was extremely unsure of my choice. As someone who enjoys fashion and shopping and changing up my "look" everyday, could I really survive an entire year without new clothes? "Surely, this is a bad idea," I feared. But I knew that I believed in the philosophy that you don't need to spend a lot of money to look stylish, so I carried on.

Everyday as I looked in my closet, I pushed myself to see things in a different light and keep my outfits interesting and stylish. At times, it was a challenge to overcome the societal pressure we all feel to give into fashion trends (polka-dots, neon, colored denim.. I wanted all of it) but I found that once I focused on what I do have, I didn't feel so left out. Slowly, I started to feel more and more comfortable wearing similar outfits day after day. I realized that it's okay (and really cool) to have a "signature look" (mine is jeans, a v-neck t-shirt and a scarf). I also learned that if you haven't worn something for a year, you probably won't wear it ever again, even if you're on a shopping fast. Things that started the year in the back of my closet are still there.

And the thing that surprised me most about this year-long shopping fast....

I felt more freedom in all aspects of my life. I never realized before how much of my mental capacity was used up thinking about clothes and future purchases. From online shopping to actual shopping to staring at pictures of fashionable girls in magazines or blogs, there are so many opportunities for women to think about fashion and compare themselves to other women. Once I eliminated the possibility of buying new clothes, my brain automatically expanded its capacity to think and talk about more important and practical matters like social issues, future goals, or building relationships with loved ones.

Now, that is a gift I am truly thankful for.

I've put together a visual summary of all my outfit posts throughout the year. Click on each photo below to see the original post.

Your resolve to not shop has uber amounts of wisdom and lessons wrapped up around it.

America is all about consuming and purchasing and buying and comparing and one-upping the next person. We're never satisfied...never grateful and content in the moment.

I'm sure something as simple as not buying new clothes really made a spiritual difference. I hope it changed you for the better and follows you into the dressing room in 2013 :) We're more than our new clothes!

So easy to say, so much harder to actually do. You rock!

What a crazy amount of discipline that must have taken! I don't think I could do a challenge like that, but it's a really interesting thought. Congrats on making it through a whole year though!

I'm impressed and seriously thinking of trying this for 2013. I assume this includes shoes and bags, right?
Also, I'm curious, now that you have successfully completed your challenge, will you now shop or continue into 2013? Thanks for the inspiration! Patti lebl9077@bellsouth.net

Wow, a whole year without buying clothes! I am never to bothered about following trends but I just can't help buying an item of clothing if I see something I like when I'm out! And a whole year without buying anything :o that must of taken some discipline you definitely have something to be proud off!
Have you set yourself a challenge this year?

I'm so impressed that you went the whole year without any clothing purchases! I'm not sure I have that type of resolve. Good for you though -- and look at all your cute outfits!

Good for you. I'm trying to cut back on my clothes purchases as well. Shopping at thrift stores as much as I can too. All your outfits are adorable too. If you're creative you never truly have nothing to wear!

I'm officially inspired. I'm not a huge shopper, but I don't know that I want to commit to a year. HOWEVER, I am very tempted to commit to not shopping until my 30th birthday, which is in June, so it would be almost half a year.........hmmmmmm.
Thanks for the inspiration!

Awesome job, congrats on making it through a whole year! I've just started a very similar challenge of not shopping for a year. I have a feeling that I'll struggle with it a bit more than you did, but I know I can be successful if I really try my best. :) --Dani
