Heart-Shaped Sugar Cookies

The way to a man's heart is through his stomach. As cliché as this phrase sounds, it's true!! This week, I'm going to share some recipes that will help enhance your Valentine's Day celebrations.

These heart-shaped cookies are so classic and can be given as a gift, served as dessert, or brought to a party/work to share. (They also serve as an excellent midnight snack!)

Yield: about 24-36 cookies, depending on the size
Prep Time: 45 minutes
Waiting Time: 3 hours
Baking Time: 15 minutes
Total Time: about 4 hours

INGREDIENTS:

{for the cookies}

1 cup butter (2 sticks), softened
1 1/2 cups granulated sugar
3 eggs
1 teaspoon vanilla
3 cups flour
2 teaspoons cream of tartar
1/2 teaspoon salt
1 teaspoon baking soda

{for the buttercream frosting}

1 cup (2 sticks) unsalted butter, softened
1 teaspoon vanilla extract
4 cups confectioners' sugar
2 Tablespoons milk

DIRECTIONS:

{for the cookies}

In a medium bowl, mix flour, cream of tartar, salt, and baking soda. Set aside. In a large bowl, beat together eggs, sugar and vanilla until creamy. Add eggs one at a time, beating well between each addition. Slowly add the flour mixture and blend until fully incorporated. When all ingredients are mixed well, cover bowl with plastic wrap and place in the refrigerator for 3 hours.

When dough is cool, take out of the fridge and pre-heat the oven to 375 degrees.

On a floured surface, take a ball of dough and roll with a rolling pin until dough is flat and about 1/4 inch in thickness. Use flour on the rolling pin to ensure dough doesn't stick. Using heart-shaped cookie cutters (or a thin knife), cut dough into shapes. Place hearts onto a cookie sheet about 1/2 inch apart and bake for 6-8 minutes.

{for the frosting}

In a medium bowl, cream the butter until smooth. Add the vanilla extract and then the confectioners' sugar, one cup at a time. Add milk and beat at medium speed until light and fluffy. Add a few drops of red food coloring for a light pink hue.

Once the cookies are cool, frost with buttercream frosting. Enjoy!
